Naw he wanted a dual format release, even was very adament about the superiority of blue ray. Esentually Paramount told him to retract his statement and showed him the bribe money from HDDVD and then he agreed with his company on the format. Later he went back to his stance once the supporters of HDDVD started jumping ship.
Now mind you that was paraphrased for simplicity but that's the general gist of it.
I'm glad it's dying, one more chance for Sony to dig out of the slide it's consoles have been having and frankly I like Blue ray more not only for the HD but as an archive format.
HDDVD will be fully dead by summer, though probably fall when this summer's blockbusters are heading to DVD the major companies will jump to the format for the most sales.
For the majority of people, Blu-Ray's capacity and capabilities are meaningless.
High-Def DVD may not even take off that much, which is what's pissing off the majority of the industry. DVD sales and technology sales have plateaued with most VHS owners already having bought a DVD player so now their revenues are slacking.
It isn't so much that Blu-Ray will replace DVD... but if Blu-Ray OR downloadable high-def content will replace DVD down the road.
I'm still a long way off from being able to afford an HDTV much less a player to play stuff on. I know very little about any of it. I just don't want to have to buy all my dvd's all over again. Most of the stuff I like was made in the 80's or before and I have to wonder if I really need HD to enjoy them since they were not filmed with that in mind anyway.
NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I have a feeling Bonehead Bay's got something to do with this...

GAH! what the FUCK! Just when i get a cheap widescreen HD tv because the owner went blind!
gosh darn it that was freaking hard to do! all i wanted to do was leave a comment. jeez. stupid typepad and stupid key access crap. anyway...
so does this now mean that i will have to rebuy my dvd player & all my dvds? or will blue ray play my old ones? i don't understand... :P
Blu-Ray plays regular DVDs.
And DVD isn't going anywhere for a long time.

I thought HDDVD could play regular DVDs as well.
Down the road downloadable content will replace DVD. Blu-Ray is a stopgap.
