A Nala Personal Sorta-Kinda Review: Night Rescue Team Minicons

Wow!

These guys are... how does one put it without offending... um... different.

I'm biased here since I didn't like the design aesthetic from the moment I saw them on display at the Gay Robot Convention a few months ago.

And owning them and putz'n around with them hasn't improved my opinions much.

I just feel that Hasbro kind of called it in on these guys.

Night Rescue Team

Classics Minicon DivebombDivebomb

I dont' really know if there are enough words in the English language, the Polish language, or hell even American Sign Language to describe how utterly awful this figure is.

This instantly became more hated than 6" Titanium Megatron to me.

There's absolutely NO LOVE here folks. I just can't feel this in any shape way or form!

If he became some strange whirling bladed minicon weapon for a larger bot than maybe I could blur my eyes and see some love here.

But nope. None.

Classics Minicon StrongarmStrongarm

Now Strongarm is pretty meh. He's not awful like his brother Divebomb but he's got one helluva funky transformation... and that's cool. I'm all for new transformations.

He fell about like 4 times when I tried to move his parts though.

He makes a great looking police car I suppose. There aren't a whole lotta solid black police cars and it is almost a preview of the movie Barricade character from the general appearance.

He could be a lot worse.

Classics Minicon FirebotFirebot

Now Firebot is really pretty cool. I like him a lot.

He's even got an Armada minicon connector if you are into that kind of thing.

He's the best of the three in my opinion. He's solid in both alt and bot modes and he's got some nice detail.

My only complaint is that his deco is a little dull. His head needs a paint application of silver or something to liven it up.

Straight after getting these guys, I think I figured the problem - it looks like Hasbro have come up with some incredibly complex, innovative transformations.

Unfortunately, everything else suffers.

The way Strongarm folds in the middle is excellent; but it renders him with no articulation whatsoever, as the 'usual' joints end up 45+ degrees from where they should be.

Firebot's legs break up into some interestingly shaped segments; which sadly stop them from folding at the knee. And what's with those shoulder / body connectors?

And as for Divebomb... poor, poor Divebomb. He's got a flat-top pin that holds the nose of helicopter on - but the pin is too small, and fails at its task. And using the tail of the aircraft as legs... no. Just no. It's obvious to all that the tail is too thin.

The same problem seems to have occurred in every single 'bot bar Terrorsaur - interesting transformation destroys robot mode articulation, or results in awful proportions, or both.

I will say however that I love Broadside... shame they didn't paint him maroon though. ^_^

While the robot modes are lacking, this mini-con team has sweet alt modes. I'm gonna get these ... if I ever see 'em at the stores.

Folks:

I'm going to try repainting part of Divebomb's tail boom to try and blend it in with the torso. Maybe that will help. Note that he does make a rather good though of course undersized helipack for Cybertron Runamuck (and possibly Armada Prime? Haven't tried that yet). He doesn't clip on very securely; PL port seems big.
