Ok. I just have to know.
Do you all read the instructions to transform a figure or do you try to figure it out yourself?
Me? I'm pretty much a non-instructions guy.
I usually keep the box to have the picture on the back for both modes to compare it to and throw it out when I'm done.
I'm also guilty of transforming once and never again. The final mode tends to be whatever will fit on the shelves the best and then I forget I bought the figure for another 2 years. Lame. I know.
I have gotten a lot of email over the past few years about some minor mistransformations but I really could care less if I missed something.
Anyway, do you read the instructions?

When I was a kid I refused to read the instructions. It was like a puzzle or challenge or something. Besides, the G1 figures weren't exactly brain surgery.
For classics Jetfire, I'd have to admit that I read 'em through just because I loved the figure so damn much. Besides, some of the functions weren't as obvious as say a G1 Sideswipe.
Only as a last resort. I like figuring it out for myself, but I didn't want to break Alt Grimlock.
It depends on the complexity of the figure. If it looks like it will be tough to transform, I will use the instructions from the beginning (I mostly do this with Alts). If its a fairly simple looking figure I will try to transform it on my own then use the pictures on the box to figure out the rest.
Hmm, I guess I am in the minority. I read the instructions when I attempt my first transformation of a figure - just to prevent potentially breaking it. The exception would be with mini-cons, I suppose.
And I too, am guilty of transforming a figure a few times, then placing it on the shelf. Except for the TF Classics ... they are way too much fun!!
(A shame about Ramen junkie's Mirage.)
Hahha have you seen my video reviews? Instructions? What's that? Seriously though, I never read instructions until I get stuck. Of course I'm very careful to not to force things until I know that's where they belong.
i read (more like glance) the instructions during the first transformation...even when it's not needed, i do it anyway...
i guess it's more like a habit/ritual than anything else...
i've caused minor damage to one TF, and that was enough for me to always err on the side of caution.
BTW nala, i still think classics mirage's head is too small, but his articulation makes him too damn fun...
I can't even transform Alt Grimlock using the instructions.
He will never be a car again.
